*** CHANGES FOR VERSION 4.5 ST ***
1. The calls.mb file sort is back, as in the original RLI IBM version; the
directories of the W command, are not sorted though!
2. The untangle commands, GM, GR, and GU will now act as the IBM version,
in that they will shrink the size of the mail.dat file, if there are
fewer active messages.
3. BIDS are now supported. All features of the IBM version of 4.5 are now
present, except the gateway/dual port features, due to the fact that
the ST has only one serial port.
4. A bug has been fixed to keep the mailbox from crashing should the user
enter a control Z prior to the end of a line of a message. Should this
happen a ~ charactor is substituted.
5. PRTLOG.TTP will now send it's output to a FILE !!!!!!!!!! This should
allow you to print some nice log reports. The following syntax will
sent the program to a file:
log.mb > myfile<cr>
Sorry, but the redirection directly to the printer still does not work on
the ST version. Double click the filename, and chose the printer option!
6. The MEDIT.TTP program is now present and working. This can repair "SOME"
types of mail.dat file damage. It works, but I have not found it very
useful so far. It is included for what ever benefit you might get from it!
7. Version 4.5 was tested for two months, and numerous changes were made.
Many bugs that existed in previous releases were corrected. Some problems
still exist because of the TOS operating system. As before, you are warned
against NESTING folders on ANY release of ROMS to date. Also, the folder
fix program can be useful, but it DOES NOT fix this problem, as it will
only delay it. During nested folder access, each access counts as a folder,
so no matter how many extra folders you ask for, you are going to have a
real problem when you reach that point due to NESTED folder accesses.
8. This program may not (probably won't) operate correctly with Kantronics
and other truely not TAPR compatable TNC1 or TNC2 tncs. I am sorry about
this, but I did not write the BBS portions of the software, and do not
have these other TNCs available to me for testing. The use of NON-STANDARD
TNCs will produce unpredictable results with this software.
9. I have had a number of requests saying I should add directory access to this
program. This puzzles me! You can see the contents of any directory on your
system either with the W command (example W A:*.*) or from PET using any
of the save, load, kill commands, via the standard file selector box.
10. LACK OF REGISTORED USERS! I put a README.TXT file on the 4.2 release,
asking that users of the program register with me, at no charge, and let
me get an idea of the size of the user base. To date, I have received only
1 registration, (as of May 29, 1988) and must assume that this software is
not being used by much of anyone.
In light of that, it is possible that there will be NO FURTHER RELEASES!
IF I decide for my own BBS operations, that a change is needed, I will then
release to the world the altered version. At present, I am satisfied with
4.5, and would have stuck with version 4.2, had it not been for the fact
that Florida went totally with the BID system, forcing me to upgrade my
own softare.
PACK-ET-TERM was developed by me at my own expense, in attempt to show the
packet users of the USA what a good computer the Atari ST is. It has not
worked at all! The ST is on the decline in the US, and I have serious worrys
in regards to it's future here. I feel that most of the user base for my
software is in Europe, and I have gotten some nice mail from there.
Quite frankly the development of PACK-ET-TERM and the ST BBS ports has been
financed on plastic (credit cards), and I have never asked (nor am I now)
for any money. I felt it was enough to know that there were HAMS that were
using my software and appreciating it. The lack of response to my registration
request, has quite frankly left me quite depressed. That, coupled with the
decline of the ST in the US, I find troublesum!
It is likely that any further release from me for the ST will NOT BE freeware,
if there are any! I am presently considering the development of NON-HAM
Radio software for the IBM PC. I certainly regret it has come to this.
To all those that have written with suggestions and praise, I say thankyou!
Your comments have been appreciated more than you will ever know! To those
who have requested SOURCE CODE, I am sorry, but the answer is still NO,
I am not willing to release it, and W0RLI no longer wishes to have his
source released as well.
There is a serious problem with software piracy, and thus far the code for
the RLI BBS, the TNC2 firmware, and the NETROM code, have all been stolen.
It is my fear that my software could also be stolen, and then SOLD for profit
by someone else. Since I never sold PACK-ET-TERM for profit, I don't care
to risk it! Sorry it has to be that way!
73 and best wishes from the USA,
Chuck Harrington, WA4GPF, ST enthusiast!!!!!!
